After studying piano with Gernot Sieber in Munich, Arnulf Herrmann went on to study composition and musicology in Dresden (W. Krätzschmar, J. Herchet), Paris (G. Grisey, E. Nuñes) and Berlin (F. Goldmann - composition, G. Neuwirth/ H. Fladt/J. Mainka – theory).
