Het geslacht Aster hoort tot composietenfamilie (Compositae of Asteraceae). Vanwege de prachtige bloei (in bloemhoofdjes) zijn er veel cultivars als tuinplant gekweekt. De Noord-Amerikaanse soorten van het geslacht Aster zijn ondergebracht in het geslacht Symphyotrichum. Verder zijn er enkele soorten overgebracht naar de geslachten en . Tot het geslacht Aster behoren nu alleen Euraziatische soorten. In Nederland en België komen de volgende soorten voor: * (Aster laevis - sierplant, soms verwilderd).
