Bacillus megaterium estas Gram-pozitiva, senmova, stanget-forma bakterio. Ĝi havas la grandon de 2 x 5 µm kaj estas tiel „granda" inter la eŭbakterioj. La bakterio kreskas inter aerobaj cirkonstancoj, estas oksidaz-negativa kaj katalaz-pozitiva. Kiel ĉiuj bakterioj el genro Bacillus, B. megaterium estas sporoprodukta. La bakteriaj kolonioj el B. megaterium montras sur la nutraĵgrundo flavetan koloron. B. megaterium estas ebla alternativo al Escherichia coli ĉe la industria produktado de rekombinitaj proteinoj.
