Il baseball ([ˈbeɪsbɔːl]; tradotto come pallabase o palla base, raramente palla a base) è uno sport di squadra in cui due squadre composte da nove giocatori si affrontano per nove inning (o riprese) in ciascuno dei quali le due squadre si alternano nella fase di attacco e di difesa. Il lanciatore (della squadra in difesa) lancia la palla verso il ricevitore, situato dietro alla casa base, dove è presente anche il battitore (della squadra in attacco), che cerca di colpirla "in battuta" con la mazza, in modo da avanzare in senso antiorario su una serie di quattro basi, poste agli angoli di un rombo chiamato diamante, e tornare infine al punto di partenza (casa base), segnando così un punto (run) per la propria squadra. La squadra in difesa, composta, oltre che dal lanciatore (in attacco), da altri giocatori posti in diversi punti del campo, cercherà di eliminare il battitore facendo giungere la palla ad una base prima del battitore stesso, oppure semplicemente afferrando al volo la palla battuta. Disciplina olimpica dal 1992, il baseball venne rimosso dai Giochi Olimpici dopo Pechino 2008; tuttavia è stato reinserito nel programma a cinque cerchi dai Giochi della XXXII Olimpiade di Tokyo, nel 2021.
