Sign in to savethumb|Batoning a piece of wood Batoning is the technique of cutting or splitting wood by using a baton-sized stick or mallet to repeatedly strike the spine of a sturdy knife, chisel or blade in order to drive it through wood, similar to how a froe is used. The batoning method can be used to make kindling or desired forms such as boards, slats or notches. The practice is most useful for obtaining dry wood from the inside of logs for the purpose of fire making.

Il Batoning (dall'inglese baton: bastone) è una tecnica per tagliare o separare legna utilizzando un bastone o un martello per colpire il retro della lama di un coltello, scalpello o una qualsiasi altra lama per farla penetrare all'interno del legno spaccandolo.. La tecnica del batoning può essere usata per realizzare ramoscelli di legno o varie forme desiderate come tavoli, listelli o tacche. Questa pratica è molto utile per ottenere legna asciutta dall'interno dei tronchi, al fine di accendere il fuoco.
