Benjamin (volksetymologisch "zoon van de rechterhand" of "zoon van geluk", zie etymologie verderop) is in de Hebreeuwse Bijbel de jongste zoon van Jakob en Rachel en broer van Jozef. Rachel stierf bij zijn geboorte. Zij noemde haar zoon aanvankelijk "Ben-Oni": "zoon van (mijn) smart" of "zoon van (mijn) rijkdom of groeikracht". Zijn vader veranderde dit in "Ben-Jamin".
