Blaise Pascal (Clermont-Ferrand, 19 de junho de 1623 – Paris, 19 de agosto de 1662) foi um matemático, escritor, físico, inventor, filósofo e teólogo francês. Prodígio, Pascal foi educado por seu pai. Os primeiros trabalhos de Pascal dizem respeito às ciências naturais e ciências aplicadas. Contribuiu significativamente para o estudo dos fluidos. Ele esclareceu os conceitos de pressão atmosférica e vácuo, estendendo o trabalho de Evangelista Torricelli. Pascal escreveu textos importantes sobre o método científico. Aos 19 anos inventou a primeira máquina de calcular, chamada de máquina de aritmética, depois roda de pascalina e finalmente pascalina. Construiu cerca de vinte cópias na década seguinte.
