Un danseur de breakdance est appelé breakdancer, Bboy ou b-boy (pour un homme), Bgirl ou b-girl (pour une femme). Bien qu’on pense qu'il est né aux États-Unis, des archives montrent qu'une forme de breakdance était dansée en Afrique, plus exactement à Kaduna, au Nigéria, dans les années 1950. Il y a souvent un amalgame entre le breakdance et d'autres danses. Quand la presse s'y intéresse, au début des années 1980, elle ignore qu'une véritable culture de la danse a toujours été omniprésente aux États-Unis ; elle y voit un phénomène spontané et labellise toutes les nouvelles danses sous le terme unique de « breakdance ».
