==Toponymy== The name is thought to derive from the spring called "Bull Well", which runs out of the Bunter sandstone over a bed of clay, near the north end of the forest. The Place Names of Notts suggests that the first part of the name may stand for an Anglo Saxon person called Bulla or describe the bubbling sound produced by the flowing water of the spring.
