About 200 species formerly assigned to Calathea are now in the genus Goeppertia. Calathea currently contains around 60 species. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescences. The young leaves and bracts can retain pools of water called phytotelmata, that provide habitat for many invertebrates.

Calathea es un género de plantas de la familia de las Marantaceae. Nativa de América tropical, principalmente de Brasil y Perú, muchas de las especies son populares como plantas hogareñas o de ornato, algunas conocidas como de la plegaria o cebra. Comprende 689 especies descritas, y de éstas, solo 287 están aceptadas.[2] Índice 1 Descripción 2 Taxonomía 3 Algunas especies 4 Referencias Descripción Son plantas herbáceas, rizomatosas, que en estado espontáneo pueden alcanzar un metro de altura, mientras que si son cultivadas no rebasan los 50-60 cm. Tiene hojas muy hermosas, con extraordinario colorido en alternancia de verdes, rosas y púrpuras, en varias tonalidades y matices. Se utilizan como plantas de interior: en las regiones tropicales se convierten en espléndidas plantas de jardín. Al ser una planta selvática, debe permanecer en una estancia cálida de entre (16 y 20 °C), húmeda y en una posición en la que tenga sombra parcial, nunca, sol directo.[3] Necesitan luz difusa, nada de sol directo, no soportan temperaturas inferiores a los 18 °C y necesitan ambientes húmedos. == Description == === Foliage === Calathea leaves are often large and colorfully patterned. The leaves are often variegated with bright colors such as pink, orange, red, and white. The underside of their leaves are frequently purple. During the night, the leaves fold up. In the morning, the leaves unfurl in search of the morning sun. This phenomenon, known as nyctinasty, is made possible by a small joint the plant possesses between the stem and leaf, called a pulvinus.
