Gaio Giulio Cesare Augusto Germanico (in latino: Gaius Iulius Caesar Augustus Germanicus; nelle epigrafi: C·CAESAR·AVG·GERMANICVS·PON·M·TR·POT; Anzio , 31 agosto 12 – Roma , 24 gennaio 41), regnante con il nome di Gaio Cesare e meglio conosciuto con il soprannome di Caligola, è stato il terzo imperatore romano, appartenente alla dinastia giulio-claudia. Regnò per meno di quattro anni dal 37 al 41, anno della sua morte. Le fonti storiche antiche note hanno tramandato di Caligola un'immagine di despota, sottolineandone stravaganze, eccentricità e depravazione. Lo si accusa di aver dilapidato il patrimonio accumulato dal predecessore, per quanto ciò avvenisse anche per ottemperare ai lasciti testamentari stabiliti da Tiberio e per offrire al popolo giochi, denaro e cibo. Le sue stravaganze, ispirate all'autocrazia dei monarchi orientali ellenistici e al disprezzo per la classe senatoria, non furono molto diverse dalla vendetta che Tiberio stesso mise in atto negli ultimi anni del suo principato.D'altra parte ci sono aspetti che indicano che la sua amministrazione iniziale ebbe anche lati positivi, come la riduzione della tassa sulle vendite (centesima rerum venalium) e la realizzazione e ristrutturazione di alcune opere pubbliche. Negli ultimi tempi diede segni di squilibrio mentale, tanto da indurre a credere che soffrisse di una malattia degenerativa. Fu assassinato a 28 anni da alcuni soldati della guardia pretoriana.
