Canillo is one of seven parishes that make up the small country of Andorra, and it serves as the religious heart of the nation, home to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell (Andorra's patron saint) and a well-preserved Romanesque church called Sant Joan de Caselles. While the parish has developed tourism, it maintains its traditional character through livestock farming and agriculture, with a population of around 4,800 people and borders with France to its north and east.
