Carl Spitzweg

Carl Spitzweg was a male painter, writer, and poet from the Kingdom of Bavaria. Born in Munich in 1808, he spent his life in the city, where he also died in 1885. He was educated at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and worked within the Post-romanticism movement. His professional activities included painting and poetry, which he created in the German language.

Notable works by Spitzweg include The Bookworm, The Poor Poet, and The intercepted love letter. He also produced literary pieces such as Autobiography (illustrated), Und abends tu ich dichten, and Bilder der Romantik 2004. Kalender. His artworks are held in the collections of the Belvedere, Städel Museum, Museum Georg Schäfer, and Bavarian State Painting Collections. He is buried at the Alter Südfriedhof in Munich.
