Das Land Krain, slowenisch [Dežela] Kranjska („[Land] Krain“) (mittellateinisch und englisch Carniola, französisch: Carniole), war um 973 (nach anderen Quellen 976) eine dem Herzogtum Kärnten vorgelagerte Mark. Nach der Abtrennung von Kärnten um 1002 wurde die Krain eine selbstständige Grenzmark mit eigenen Markgrafen. Ab 1364 war sie Herzogtum und ab 1849 österreichisches Kronland. Nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges 1918 ging die Krain in Slowenien auf, das dem SHS-Staat angehörte, der 1929 von König Aleksandar I. Karađorđević in Königreich Jugoslawien (Kraljevina Jugoslavija) umbenannt wurde. Heute ist das ehemalige Herzogtum Krain Teil der Republik Slowenien, jedoch keine Gebietskörperschaft. Die einstige Hauptstadt des Herzogtums, Ljubljana (dt. Laibach), ist heute die Hauptstadt Sloweniens.
