Accipitridae are a large bird family, the type taxon of order Accipitriformes. Previously Accipitridae and Falconidae were grouped together in order Falconiformes.

Note that Wikimedia Commons, following outdated taxonomy, incorrectly includes many species in Accipiter which are currently placed in other genera of Accipitridae, namely Astur, Tachyspiza, Lophospiza, Aerospiza and Microspizias. Indeed these wrongly classified species vastly outnumber actual Accipter species.
