Buttonquails are quail-like birds. They are not related to quails, however, but were formerly placed into the Gruiformes (cranes, rails and allies). The Sibley–Ahlquist taxonomy erroneously considered them a family of their own (Turniciformes). Currently, they are placed among the shorebirds (Charadriiformes).
