Chaum est une commune rurale qui compte 195 habitants en 2019, après avoir connu un pic de population de 455 habitants en 1856. Elle fait partie de l'aire d'attraction de Bagnères-de-Luchon. Ses habitants sont appelés les Chaumois ou Chaumoises.
