Cheddi Jagan

Cheddi Jagan was a Guyanese politician, dentist, and head of government who served as Prime Minister of Guyana and president. A member of the People's Progressive Party, he was born in Port Mourant in 1918 and died in Washington, D.C., in 1997. He was educated at Howard University, Northwestern University, and the Feinberg School of Medicine. Jagan was married to Janet Jagan and practiced Hinduism.

He authored works including *A new global human order*, *Guyana needs Cheddi*, *The role of the C.I.A. in Guyana and its activities throughout the world*, *Three pamphlets on Guyana*, and *West on Trial*. His academic interests encompassed politics, history, sociology, political science, and law. Jagan received the Order of the Companions of O. R. Tambo and the Order of Friendship of Peoples. He was a citizen of Guyana, India, the British Raj, and the Dominion of India, and spoke English.
