This silver replica is a reproduction of a mid-15tyh century bronze roundel by Donatello depicting the Virgin and Child with angels, made for the artist's physician, Giovanni Chellni da San Minatio, and hence known as the Chellini roundel. This bronze is also in the collection of the V&A (inv. no. A.1-1976). 750 silver replicas were made in 1976 in order to raise the funds to acquire the Donatello. This one, acquired by the donor in 1976, has recently been presented as a gift to the Museum.
