Cibicidoides is an extant genus of benthic foraminifera, with the oldest known species dating back to the Paleogene Period. (66 mya - 23 mya)
Like other benthic foraminifera, Cibicidoides are singled celled eucaryotic protists. They secrete a shell, or test, formed out of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which provides a durable source of protection compared to other protists.
