Civic Center

The CCCBD improves and promotes San Francisco’s historic Civic Center through a host of planning, policy and public programming initiatives. In addition to focused and responsive neighborhood clean and safe programs, CCCBD provides public open space beautification, activation and advocacy on behalf of the area’s diverse constituency. Regular meetings of the CCCBD Board of Directors are traditionally held on the fourth Wednesday of every-other-month, at noon. Special Meetings are called when needed. Board meetings are open to the public, with time for public comment. Meetings are held at 1355 Market St, Ste 250, unless otherwise noted in the agenda. The Civic Center Community Benefit District awards the Civic Star Award annually to individuals and organizations who have supported the mission of the CCCBD by instituting projects, policies and programs that enhance the District. 2025 The 2025 Civic Star Award went to Michael Lennon, who has managed the SF Public Works Inspection and Code Enforcement Bureau since 2016, and greatly expanded his scope of responsibility to include the Sidewalk Vending Permit and Enforcement Program. We’re grateful to Michael and his team for their work keeping Civic Center, and all City, sidewalks and plazas clear and safe. 2024 The 2024 Civic Star Award went to Captain Daniel Manning of the SFPD for his leadership and guidance solving for crime and safety concerns in the District. Captain Manning played a key role on the public-private strategic intervention team, addressing complex public safety issues in the Civic Center/Mid Market/Tenderloin area. The award was presented by CCCBD Board Member and head of security at the Asian Art Museum, Calen McEldowny. 2023 The 2023 Civic Star Award went to Dan Mauer of the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department (right) and Bryan Valverde of Valverde Company for their roles in the physical transformation of the new UN Plaza into a positive public space that fosters community. 2022 The 2022 Civic Star Award was awarded to Heart of the City Farmers’ Market Executive Director Steve Pulliam for his continued dedication to the Market, its customers and UN Plaza. Board Member and owner of Hayes Street Grill, Patricia Unterman, presented the award to Pulliam against the backdrop of City Hall. 2019 The 2019 Civic Star Awards were presented to SFPD Lieutenant Dean Hall and Louie Hammonds of Urban Alchemy, as both have worked diligently to enhance public safety and well being in Civic Center. 2018 The 2018 Civic Star Award was presented to Jackie Safier of the Helen Diller Family Foundation for her support in bringing the Helen Diller Civic Center Playgrounds and the Bi-Rite Cafe to the heart of the District: Civic Center Plaza; the award was presented by SF Recreation & Parks Department Director Phil Ginsburg. 2017 The 2017 Civic Star Award was presented to the Downtown Streets Team for their service alongside the CCCBD’s Clean Team. CCCBD Board Member Susan McConkey presented the award to Meagan Lillis, who accepted on behalf of Downtown Streets Team. 2016 CCCBD’s 2016 Civic Star Award was presented to Allison Wyckoff of the Asian Art Museum for leading efforts to facilitate public programming in Civic Center at the Village Artist Corner.
