硬貨(こうか)とは、一般に何らかの金属(合金含む)で作られた貨幣である。コイン(coin)ともよばれる。かつて「コイン」は基本的に金や銀の素材金属の価値と額面の差の無い本位通貨やその補助貨幣として鋳造されることが多かったが、現在は管理通貨制度の下で不換紙幣と並列して素材の価値が額面を大きく下回る硬貨のみが流通する。 他方、経済学においては「硬貨」はハードカレンシー(国際決済通貨)や本位貨幣を指すことばであり、対義語の「軟貨」(ソフトカレンシー)とは国際決済に用いられない・用いることが出来ない通貨を指す。
