Elle est souvent confondue avec le milan noir qui lui a la queue échancrée ; la buse, elle, a la queue arrondie. Comme son nom l'indique elle a le plumage très variable selon les individus, généralement brun foncé avec le dessous tacheté de blanc mais les nuances sont infinies entre le noir et le blanc en passant par toutes les nuances de marron. L'œil est brun.
