火災（かさい）は、火による災害。消防統計上は「人の意図に反して発生拡大または放火により発生して消火の必要がある燃焼現象であって、これを消火するために消火施設又はこれと同程度の効果のあるものの利用を必要とするもの、又は人の意図に反して発生し若しくは拡大した爆発現象」と定義される。火事（かじ）と呼ばれることもあるが、火災と火事は区別される。また、火難（かなん）などともいわれ、小規模な内に消し止められたものは小火（ぼや）、焼失面積が大きく被害が甚大なものは大火（たいか）ともいう。被害は有形財産の焼失はもとより、消火の際に水等に濡れて汚損されて損失となる場合や、怪我人や死者がでることも頻繁にある。山林で起こる林野火災のことを特に山火事という。 「山火事」も参照
