All characters have the same width, like old typewriters, making it a good choice for personal and business correspondance. The improved Windows font display allowed a design with proportions closer to normal text than traditional monospaced fonts like Courier. This allows for more comfortably reading of extended text on screen. OpenType features include hanging or lining numerals; slashed, dotted and normal zeros; and alternative shapes for a number of lowercase letters. Consolas ist eine nichtproportionale Schrift des Typedesigners Lucas de Groot. Sie ist Teil einer Reihe neuer Schriftarten, die mit Microsoft Windows Vista eingeführt wurden, und ist darüber hinaus auch in Microsoft Office seit der Windows-Version 2007 sowie der Mac-OS-X-Version 2008 enthalten. Hier löst sie Courier New als Standard-Nichtproportional-Schrift ab. Unter den sechs mit Windows Vista eingeführten Clear-Type-Schriften ist sie die einzige nichtproportionale Schriftart. Sie wurde vor allem für die Programmierung entworfen. Da ihre Zeichen normalem Text ähnlicher sind als bei der bisher meist verwendeten Courier New, sind auch längere Texte leichter am Bildschirm lesbar. Consolas enthält die Zeichensätze Latein, Latein (erweitert), Griechisch und Kyrillisch.
