Coriolanus is William Shakespeares laatste tragedie en meteen ook zijn laatste stuk uit een reeks over het Oude Rome. Hij schreef het omstreeks 1608, na zijn andere tragedies Othello, King Lear, Macbeth en Antony and Cleopatra. Het verhaal gaat over de historische Romeinse staatsman, militair en held Gaius Marcius Coriolanus uit de late 6e eeuw v.Chr. en het begin van de 5e eeuw v.Chr.. Shakespeare haalde zijn inspiratie voor dit toneelstuk voornamelijk uit Plutarchus' autobiografie van Coriolanus in een Engelse vertaling door Thomas North uit 1579.
