Joseph Cotter Smith (Washington, 29 maggio 1949) è un attore statunitense. Smith è figlio di Madeline (nata Cotter) e John Lewis Smith, Jr., che era un giudice federale mentre sua madre morì quando aveva 18 anni. Nel 1972, ebbe la laurea in letteratura al ad Hartford, Connecticut. Si è sposato tre volte: prima dal 1972 al 1980 con Christina Egloff; poi dal 1988 al 1996 con l'attrice Mel Harris da cui ha avuto una figlia, Madeline (1990) e dal 2001 è sposato con la produttrice radiofonica Heidi Mueller.
