Ihr Stammesgebiet erstreckt sich von den Rocky Mountains bis zum Atlantischen Ozean über Teile der Vereinigten Staaten und Kanadas. Sie selbst bezeichnen sich als Ayisiniwok und Aha payew – „Wahre Menschen“ oder im Sinne von „das Volk“ als Iniwak, Iyiniwok, Eenou, Iynu oder Eeyou. Später bezeichneten sich viele Gruppen auch als Wi Iniwak oder Wiyiniwak, was so viel bedeutet wie „Volk, mit gemischter Herkunft“. Ihre Sprache, das Cree, gehört der Algonkin-Sprachgruppe an; mit ihr verwandt ist das Michif der Métis.Die Cree stellen heute die mit Abstand größte Gruppe unter den First Nations dar.
