Daala is a video coding format that was under development by the Xiph.Org Foundation, under the lead of Timothy B. Terriberry and mainly sponsored by the Mozilla Corporation. Like Theora and Opus, Daala is available free of any royalties and its reference implementation is being developed as free and open-source software. The name is taken from the fictional character of Admiral Natasi Daala from the Star Wars universe.

Daala is the codename for a new video compression technology. The effort is a collaboration between the Mozilla Foundation, the Xiph.Org Foundation and any other contributors that wish to help. The goal of the project is to provide a video format that's free to implement, use and distribute, and a reference implementation with technical performance superior to H.265. For more information, see the [Daala wiki][wiki]. The wiki has quickstart pages for [Linux/OS X][posix], [Windows][win], and [Windows MinGW64][mingw]. Daala uses the [GitHub Issue Tracker][issues] and the [Rietveld][code review] code review tool. [Jenkins][jenkins] is used for continuous integration. There's an IRC channel daala on chat.freenode.org. If you don't have IRC set up you can easily connect from your [web browser][webchat].

Daalaとは、動画圧縮規格の一つで、Xiph.Org FoundationとMozilla Foundationにより共同開発が進められている。Theoraの後継であり、オープンソースの下で開発されるロイヤリティーフリーの動画圧縮規格である。 H.265やVP9といった次世代コーデックを超えることを目標にしている。長年にわたって広く使われている離散コサイン変換（DCT）の使用を避け、（Lapped transform）を用いるのが特徴で、これにより品質向上と特許リスクの低減を見込んでいる。 2017年にAOMedia Video 1（以下AV1）が開発したことに伴い、AV1はDaalaの仕様を組み込んだため、以降の開発は事実上AV1に統合された。
