The name is derived from the Greek words δεσμός (desmos), meaning "bundle", and ἄνθος (anthos), meaning "flower". It contains about 24 species of herbs and shrubs that are sometimes described as being suffruticose and have bipinnate leaves. Desmanthus es un género de plantas con flores perteneciente a la familia Fabaceae. Contiene unas 24 especies de plantas herbáceas y arbustos. Desmanthus está relacionado con Leucaena y en apariencia es similar a Neptunia. Como las especies de Mimosa y Neptunia, las especies del género Desmanthus cierran rápidamente sus hojas al anochecer. Es originario de México, Norteamérica, Centroamérica y Sudamérica. En Cuba reciben el nombre de adormidera.
