Dezember 1993 von id Software für MS-DOS veröffentlicht. Der Spieler steuert darin einen Soldaten, der nach einem gescheiterten Forschungsexperiment auf den Marsmonden Höllenkreaturen bekämpfen muss. Wegen der 3D-Grafik und des kommerziellen Erfolgs gilt der Titel als Meilenstein im Bereich der Computerspiele. In Deutschland war der Titel ab Mai 1994 indiziert, wurde nach einer Neuprüfung im August 2011 jedoch wieder von der Liste für jugendgefährdende Medien gestrichen und erhielt eine neue Altersfreigabe der Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle. Im Laufe der Jahre wurde der Titel für zahlreiche Plattformen portiert. 1994 erschien der Nachfolger Doom 2: Hell on Earth.
