Die Stadt Dorsten liegt im äußersten Norden des Ruhrgebietes, an der Grenze zum Münsterland, im Bundesland Nordrhein-Westfalen an der Lippe. Als kreisangehörige Stadt wird Dorsten im Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR) durch den Kreis Recklinghausen vertreten. Sie ist Teil der Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr. Die alte vestische Stadt Dorsten, welche südlich der Lippe lag, erhielt am 1. Juni 1251 die Stadtrechte durch den kurkölnischen Landesherrn und wurde im 20. Jahrhundert nach Norden um das Gebiet der ehemaligen fürstbischöflich-münsterischen Herrlichkeit Lembeck nördlich der Lippe erweitert. Dorsten hatte am 31. Dezember 2018 76.383 Einwohner und ist mit 171,2 km² die flächenmäßig größte der zehn Städte im Kreis Recklinghausen. Überregional bekannt ist die Stadt auch für das Römerlager Holsterhausen.
