Possible reasons for dredging include improving existing water features; reshaping land and water features to alter drainage, navigability, and commercial use; constructing dams, dikes, and other controls for streams and shorelines; and recovering valuable mineral deposits or marine life having commercial value. In all but a few situations the excavation is undertaken by a specialist floating plant, known as a dredger.

التجريف أو الكَرْي ويكون ذلك باستخدام الجرافة المائية وتسمى الكَرَّاءَة أو الكرَّاكة، هي نوع من أنواع أعمال الحفريات التي تجري على الغالب تحت الماء في مناطق البحار الضحلة أو في مناطق المياه العذبة بغرض تجميع الطمي المترسب ورميه في مكان آخر بأهداف تسهيل عمليات الملاحة للسفن ومنع ارتطام قاعها بقعر المسطح المائي. الجرافة هي آلة للقيام بعملية التجريف وسحب الرمال من قعر المسطح المائي. وتكون على الغالب على شكل سفينة طافية على سطح الماء. الكَرَّاءَة أو الجرافة المائية هي جهاز مجهز لحفر الطين والرمل والصخور والرسوبيات الأخرى من قاع المجاري المائية.
