Dülmen ist eine mittlere kreisangehörige Stadt im nordrhein-westfälischen Kreis Coesfeld und liegt zwischen Münster und dem Ruhrgebiet. Sie hat mit ihren rund 47.000 Einwohnern den Status einer Kleinen Mittelstadt und ist damit und mit einer Fläche von etwa 185 km2 sowohl einwohner- als auch flächenmäßig größte Stadt im Kreis Coesfeld. Dülmen verfügt über ein großes Radwandernetz, was es zu einem Ausflugsziel insbesondere für das nahe Ruhrgebiet macht. Dülmen ist Mitglied der Arbeitsgemeinschaft fahrradfreundliche Städte und Gemeinden in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Eine größere Bekanntheit hat Dülmen durch die Dülmener Wildpferde und die Mystikerin Anna Katharina Emmerick. In den USA gibt es einen weiteren Ort mit Namen „Duelm“. Dort lassen sich direkte Nachfahren aus Dülmen finden, die in den 1880er Jahren in den Staat Minnesota ausgewandert sind.
