Considerato il 4° Classico Disney, Dumbo è basato sulla storia scritta da Helen Aberson e illustrata da Harold Pearl per il prototipo di un nuovo giocattolo ("Roll-a-Book"). Il protagonista è Dumbo, un cucciolo di elefante, che viene ridicolizzato per via delle sue grandi orecchie, finché non imparerà a volare utilizzando le orecchie come ali. Durante la maggior parte del film, il suo unico vero amico è il topo Timoteo.
