Edward Estlin Cummings, più noto come e.e. cummings (Cambridge, 14 ottobre 1894 – North Conway, 3 settembre 1962), è stato un poeta, pittore, illustratore, drammaturgo, scrittore e saggista statunitense. Compiuti gli studi ad Harvard, prestò servizio d'ambulanza sul fronte francese durante la prima guerra mondiale. Accusato ingiustamente di spionaggio, fu internato a La Ferté-Macé; da questa esperienza egli trasse ispirazione per La stanza enorme (in inglese Enormous Room, 1922), libro polemico e allo stesso tempo patetico e divertente. Cummings è celebre per il suo uso poco ortodosso delle maiuscole e delle regole della punteggiatura, e per il fatto di servirsi delle convenzioni sintattiche in modo avanguardista e innovativo. Nei suoi scritti si trovano segni di punteggiatura inaspettati ed apparentemente fuori posto che interrompono frasi intere o perfino singole parole.
