Considerato il "Padrino" del gangsta rap in qualità di fondatore della prima label specializzata in questo genere di rap, Ruthless Records, è giudicato uno dei migliori artisti hip-hop di sempre. Il suo terzo album, famoso per tanti "dissing" a Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog e Ice Cube, uscito nel 1993, fu uno degli album rap più venduti della storia. Dopo una battaglia, seppur breve, con l'AIDS morì il 26 marzo 1995 a 31 anni.
