Edward Eastwick

Edward Backhouse Eastwick (1814–1883) was a British diplomat, politician, translator, and writer. Born in Bracknell and educated at Charterhouse School and Merton College, he worked in London and spoke German and English. He was a member of the Conservative Party and stood as a candidate in the 1868 United Kingdom general election. Eastwick was also a Fellow of the Royal Society.

His literary output included translations and scholarly works such as *The Baitál pachísí*, *Autobiography of Lutfullah, a Mohamedan gentleman*, *The Anvár-i Suhaili: Or The Lights of Canopus*, *A Comparative Grammar of the Sanscrit, Zend, Greek, Latin, Lithuanian ...*, and *The Bāg̲h̲ o bahār, or, The garden and the spring*. He died in Ventnor. His daughter was Beatrice Heron-Maxwell.
