Elmshorn (plattdeutsch: Elveshorn und Elmshoorn) ist eine Mittelstadt in Schleswig-Holstein. Das vorwiegend industriell geprägte Elmshorn ist mit Ende 2021 über 52.000 Einwohnern und einem Einzugsgebiet mit rund 120.000 Einwohnern die sechstgrößte Stadt des Bundeslandes. Die Stadt an der Krückau, einem Nebenfluss der Elbe, liegt etwa 30 Kilometer nordwestlich von Hamburg. Elmshorn ist Sitz der Kreisverwaltung des Kreises Pinneberg, der zur Metropolregion Hamburg gehört. Die Zugehörigkeit zur Metropolregion Hamburg wird auch an der Bevölkerungsdichte deutlich: Mit über 2300 Einwohnern pro km² ist Elmshorn die am dichtesten besiedelte Gemeinde in Schleswig-Holstein und ist damit in etwa so dicht besiedelt wie der Stadtstaat Hamburg (ca. 2400 Einwohner pro km²). In der Liste deutscher Gemeinden, nach der Bevölkerungsdichte geordnet steht Hamburg an 20. Stelle und Elmshorn an 26. Stelle. Elmshorn ist in fünf Quartiere unterteilt: Kaltenweide, Langelohe/Hainholz, Klostersande/Lieth, Fuchsberg und Mitte/Flamweg. Weitere Ortsteile sind Papenhöhe, Sibirien, Vosskuhlen, Langenmoor, Sandberg, Köhnholz, Ramskamp und Franzosenhof.
