L'éthique est une discipline philosophique portant sur les jugements moraux et dont le concept est donc très proche de celui de la morale. C'est une réflexion fondamentale de tout peuple afin d'établir ses normes, ses limites et ses devoirs. Dans les pays laïcs, l'éthique est étroitement liée à la philosophie politique qui la sous tend, mais elle peut aussi être liée à la culture, la religion, les croyances et les traditions d'un pays, d'un groupe social, ou d'un système idéologique. Pour des philosophes tels qu'Aristote ou Kant, l'éthique a pour but de définir ce qui doit être. L'éthique exprime des énoncés normatifs, prescriptifs ou encore évaluatifs parmi lesquels on trouve des impératifs catégoriques. En absence d'impératif catégorique, une formulation éthique relève d'une faute de logique nommée paralogisme naturaliste. L’éthique comprend plusieurs champs d'application tel que l'éthique normative qui s'intéresse principalement aux concepts du bien et du bon que véhicule les théories de justice sociale et doctrines telles que l'utilitariste, l'égalitariste et le libertarianiste, etc. À la suite de cela, l’éthique appliquée ou l'éthique déontologique s'intéresse alors à la mise en pratique des principes moraux. L'éthique descriptive et comparative s'intéresse quant à elle à la description et à la comparaison des différents codes moraux, alors que méta-éthique s'intéresse pour sa part au sens même des concepts mobilisés par l'éthique tel que le bien le mal, le juste, etc. La réflexion éthique peut enfin porter sur les actes passés, on parle alors d'éthique de la vertu, ou sur les conséquences des actes comme le fait le conséquentialisme. Au sein d'une société mondialisée et cosmopolite dans laquelle cohabitent de nombreuses éthiques différentes, la démarche contemporaine de l'éthique consiste donc selon John Rawls à rechercher un équilibre réfléchi.
