Der Film verwendet Motive aus dem gleichnamigen Roman der französischen Autoren Pierre Souvestre und Marcel Allain. Weil der Film sehr erfolgreich war, folgten 1965 Fantomas gegen Interpol und 1967 Fantomas bedroht die Welt.
