Forchheim ist eine fränkische Große Kreisstadt im Süden des bayerischen Regierungsbezirks Oberfranken. Die Stadt ist Sitz des Landratsamts Forchheim und mit über 32.000 Einwohnern die mit Abstand einwohnerstärkste Kommune des Landkreises. In Forchheim begann im Jahre 911 die eigenständige deutsche Geschichte durch die Wahl von Konrad I. zum ersten ostfränkischen König nach der endgültigen Fränkischen Reichsteilung. Forchheim wird „Eingangstor zur Fränkischen Schweiz“ genannt. Die Stadt liegt an der Bahnstrecke Nürnberg–Bamberg, am Main-Donau-Kanal und am Frankenschnellweg zwischen Bamberg (23 km nördlich) und Nürnberg (ca. 30 km südlich). Forchheim gehört seit April 2005 der Europäischen Metropolregion Nürnberg an. In Forchheim befand sich ein fränkischer Königshof, der bis auf Karl Martell (ca. 690–741) zurückgehen soll. Die Stadt verfügt über einen gut , mit der „Kaiserpfalz“, dem Archäologiemuseum Oberfranken und dem Rathausplatz mit seinem Fachwerk-Ensemble.
