Encyclopedic overview

The French Union (French: Union française) was a extension of the French Fourth Republic to former colonies, colloquially known as the "French Empire" (Empire français), created by the French Fourth Republic. It was the end of the "indigenous" (indigène) status of French subjects in colonial areas. It was dissolved in 1958, after the downfall of the Fourth Republic.
