Originellement fondée en 1994 par (en), la compagnie devient une filiale de (en) le 11 mai 2005 puis placée en vente après une annonce faite en mai 2010. Avec son acquisition en 2017 par le conglomérat japonais Sony via Sony Pictures Television, elle est devenue une coentreprise détenue par Sony Pictures Entertainment et Aniplex, filiale de Sony Music Entertainment Japan, depuis 2020.
