Garfield

Garfield was founded in the early 1880s by Samuel J. Tant, who named the town after the 20th President of the United States, James A. Garfield. A more attractive and friendly town would be hard to find. Although small with a population of roughly 600, the town is well equipped to serve the needs of its residents. Garfield provides high quality town services including police, fire, water, sewer, refuse, road maintenance, and park services. The town boasts an excellent school, swimming pool and park. Diverse Economy: Garfield is a farming community with most of the product raised consisting of wheat, lentils, and canola. In addition to farming, Garfield is close in proximity to two universities. The University of Idaho is located 26 miles from Garfield in Moscow, Idaho and Washington State University is located 25 miles from Garfield in Pullman, Washington. The universities provide employment for many Garfield residents. Schweitzer Engineering, responsible for producing electronic supplies worldwide, is also another large employer in the Pullman area. Housing Quality: Homes for purchase and rent are available in Garfield with the bulk of houses consisting of mostly well maintained and remodeled historic properties. Garfield is far enough from urban areas to preserve its rural character and values. Safe, attractive neighborhoods are the norm in Garfield. Recreation: With four distinct seasons, there is much to do from fishing to snowmobiling. The area abounds with lakes, rivers, and wildlife. We are close to forest campgrounds and more. Located near town is a gun club for trap shooting and a rifle range. Schools: High quality education is offered in partnership with the neighboring town of Palouse. K through 12 education is offered by a school system that is recognized for its excellence. Education is offered through a cooperative agreement with the Town of Palouse. Palouse is located nine miles from Garfield. The high school is located in Palouse while the elementary and middle schools are located in Garfield. Both Garfield and Palouse have elementary schools. Classes are small which affords individual attention to the needs of the student. Utilities: Water, sewer and garbage are provided by the town at reasonable rates. Avista provides electrical services. High speed internet over fiber optic lines are available in town with a couple of providers to choose from for telephone and internet services. Major Highways: State Highway 27 runs north and south through Garfield providing convenient access to Spokane Valley, City of Spokane, Pullman and Lewiston/Clarkston. Access to the interstate highway system is available within a short drive of Garfield. Senior Citizens: Ladow Court is our newly constructed 16 unit assisted living facility. Within a short walk of the facility are the bank, post office and several small businesses.
