Gdynia [ˈgdɨɲa], deutsch Gdingen (1939–1945 Gotenhafen, kaschubisch Gdiniô), ist eine Hafenstadt in Polen in der Danziger Bucht. Sie bildet in der Woiwodschaft Pommern mit dem größeren Danzig (Gdańsk) und dem kleineren Sopot (Zoppot) die Metropolregion Dreistadt (Trójmiasto). Als Siedlung Gdina 1253 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, erhielt Gdynia 1926 das Stadtrecht und wurde in der Folge zur wichtigsten Hafenstadt der Zweiten Polnischen Republik ausgebaut. In den 1930er Jahren entwickelte sich Gdynia mit über 100.000 Einwohnern zur Großstadt. Während der Deutschen Besetzung Polens 1939–1945 wurde die Stadt in Gotenhafen umbenannt. Als bedeutender Marinestützpunkt der Kriegsmarine wurde sie durch Luftangriffe der Royal Air Force und der United States Army Air Forces zerstört. Heute steht Gdynia mit rund 250.000 Einwohnern auf dem zwölften Rang der größten Städte Polens. Sie ist Hauptquartier der Kriegsmarine der Republik Polen und besitzt mit der Kriegsmarineakademie und der zivilen Seefahrt-Akademie Gdynia zwei Hochschulen für Nautik.
