As climate change increases the frequency and severity of natural disasters, remote sensing data can warn about extreme events and help tackle emergency situations. In emergency services, rapid response is paramount. ICube-SERTIT’s Rapid Mapping Service provides near real-time delivery of geo-information to help emergency services respond quickly to disasters such as flooding, fires and landslides. A new Python open-source library, called EOReader, speeds up this mapping response by enabling the easy opening of imagery from multiple satellite sensors, both optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). It is part of a group of satellites collectively known as the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC) and was the first private European Earth observation satellite launched. The GEOSAT-1 mission objectives are commercial with the optical satellite images aimed at services and applications in maritime, agriculture, environment and forestry within the Iberian Peninsula region and Europe. There is a common design of the GEOSAT-1 and UK-DMC-2 spacecraft. Both spacecraft are developed to carry out a commercially-focused operational imaging mission, supporting rapid-response, large-area mapping for a range of applications. ==History== It was constructed by Surrey Satellite Technology for Elecnor Deimos, representing the first Spanish Earth observation satellite and the first private one in Europe. It is based on the SSTL-100 satellite bus. Deimos-1 was launched into a Sun-synchronous low Earth orbit. The launch was conducted by ISC Kosmotras, who used a Dnepr carrier rocket, with DubaiSat-1 as the primary payload. Deimos-1, along with the UK-DMC 2, Nanosat 1B, AprizeSat-3 and AprizeSat-4 satellites, were launched as secondary payloads. The rocket was launched at 18:46 GMT on 29 July 2009, from Site 109/95 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
