Gerard was born and spent his childhood in Holland. He toured as a chorister and was awarded a professional scholarship for piano from the Brabant’s Conservatorium. Gerard migrated to Australia with his family in 1958. He graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music then studied with Greville Rothon in Munich. He settled in Amsterdam for several years where he made his performance debut in London in 1974, but returned to live in Sydney, Australia, in 1981, joining the staff of the Sydney
