Gilbert Stuart

Gilbert Charles Stuart was an American painter and artist known for his work in portrait painting within the Neoclassicism movement. He was also an organist who worked in Dublin, Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia. Stuart was born in North Kingstown and died in Boston on July 9, 1828, from a stroke resulting in natural causes. He is buried in Massachusetts.

His notable works include the Lansdowne Portrait, and he has works in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Stuart was the father of Jane Stuart and the teacher of Thomas Sully. He spoke English and is described by sources such as The Nuttall Encyclopædia and the Encyclopædia Britannica 11th edition.
