Gilles de Roberval

Gilles Personne de Roberval was a French mathematician, professor, and physicist born in Villeneuve-sur-Verberie in 1602. He worked in the fields of mathematics, mechanics, astronomy, and physics. Roberval was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and was employed by the Collège de France, where he was also educated. He wrote in French and was influenced by Pierre de Fermat.

He died in Paris on 27 October 1675 and is buried at Saint-Séverin. Roberval’s doctoral advisor was Marin Mersenne, and his doctoral student was Isaac Barrow. He used the pseudonyms Aristarchus Samius and Aristarque de Samos. His notable works include *Ouvrages de mathematique*, *Eléments de géométrie de G.P. de Roberval*, and *Novarvm observationvm physico-mathematicarvm*. He is described in sources such as the *Encyclopædia Britannica* 11th edition and the *Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary*.
